Stephen Traskâs home was in the exclusive Biltmore Park area of Phoenix, and the expansive lot indicated it was originally an equestrian estate, complete with a horse-training ring set between the two barns. White fences more at home in the rolling hills of horse country followed us as we turned in to one of two of the gated entries. Traskâs estate stuck out like a sore thumb. It took up two city blocks, which made me believe this land had once housed two horse properties instead of the in-your-face one it now held. That was a lot of acreage in the middle of the city, even one known for expansive horse properties.
After being waved through the first entry gate, we followed the graveled drive, and I slowed Emilioâs Maybach, not wanting to pit the sedanâs finish. The drive led us to the main house, which couldnât decide if it was a farmhouse or an oversized cottage. Strangely, despite its architectural split personality, it managed to blur the line between ostentatious and welcoming.
I brought the luxury sedan to a stop at the top of the circular drive, where two people walked out of a front courtyard protected by a stucco hallway and a wrought iron gate. The house was set back far enough that all I could make out about the front doors was that they were big, wooden, and arched. I put my sunglasses on and got out of the car.
Two men came toward us, nearly identical in their dark slacks and light shirts. Definitely not businessmen, not with muscles like that. They were built to intimidate, and their blank expressions were hidden behind dark sunglasses. I went to the rear driverâs-side door and opened it for Emilio. He stepped out as the two guards came to a stop on the other side of the car. Zev didnât wait for me to play chauffeur but got out on the other side, facing down the two guards. I trailed Emilio around the Maybachâs trunk and stayed a few feet back as he continued to Zevâs side.
The guard on the right spoke first. âMr. Cordova, Mr. Trask welcomes you to his home.â He shifted his body sideways, and his companion stepped back, a clear invitation for Zev and Emilio to walk between them. âIf youâll follow me, please.â
Emilio nodded then waited for the first guard to take the lead. He fell in behind him, ignoring the second guard, who was busy staring at Zev.
Zev stopped in front of the second guard, and they engaged in a stare down. It didnât last long, because Emilio stopped, causing his escort to do the same, and called Zevâs name. When the first guard saw what was happening, it was his turn to call back. âAndrew,â he said in a distinct warning. Andrew looked at the first guard, deliberately ignored Zev, and aimed his dark lenses on me.
Doing my best to look unthreatening, which wasnât difficult, I waited by the car as Zev and Emilio disappeared into the courtyard.
